Understanding EEG

Why Is an EEG Performed?

An electroencephalogram records the brain’s electrical activity. A physician may request an EEG when symptoms or clinical findings suggest abnormal changes in brain function.

01

Suspected Seizures and Epilepsy

EEG can help identify electrical patterns associated with seizures and support the evaluation and follow-up of epilepsy.

02

Unexplained Loss of Awareness

Episodes of staring, fainting, confusion or temporary loss of awareness may require EEG assessment to investigate their cause.

03

Unusual Movements or Behavioural Episodes

Repetitive movements, sudden behavioural changes or unexplained episodes may be evaluated when seizure activity is suspected.

04

Sleep-Related Neurological Events

Sleep or prolonged EEG recording may help capture neurological events that do not appear during a short routine examination.

05

Altered Mental Status and Encephalopathy

EEG may support the assessment of unexplained confusion, reduced responsiveness or suspected disturbances of brain function.

06

ICU and Critical-Care Monitoring

Bedside or prolonged EEG can assist clinicians in monitoring unconscious, critically ill or medically complex patients.

i
EEG in Children and Autism-Related Evaluations

EEG does not diagnose autism itself. A physician may request an EEG for a child with autism when there are suspected seizures, unusual staring episodes, abnormal movements, loss of acquired skills or sudden changes in awareness. Clinical decisions must always be made by a qualified physician.

Flexible Recording Options

Choose the Right EEG Recording Duration

EEG recording duration depends on the patient’s symptoms, the frequency of suspected events and the treating physician’s clinical assessment.

Routine

Routine EEG

A standard recording commonly used as an initial assessment for suspected seizures or other neurological symptoms.

4 HR

Extended EEG

Provides additional recording time to improve the possibility of capturing intermittent abnormalities or clinical events.

8 HR

Prolonged Monitoring

Suitable when longer observation, sleep recording or monitoring of less-frequent episodes is clinically requested.

12 HR

Day or Night Monitoring

Offers prolonged observation across different states of wakefulness and sleep according to clinical requirements.

24 HR

Continuous EEG

Long-duration monitoring intended to capture infrequent events and provide a broader record for specialist review.

Which EEG duration is appropriate?

The appropriate test and recording duration should be selected by the treating physician according to the patient’s condition.

EEG Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About EEG

Clear answers about EEG testing, recording duration, preparation, home services and extended neurological monitoring.

What is an EEG test?
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. The recorded signals are reviewed and interpreted by a qualified medical specialist.
Why might a doctor request an EEG?
A physician may request an EEG when evaluating seizures or epilepsy, unusual staring or movement episodes, temporary loss of awareness, sleep-related neurological events, altered mental status, encephalopathy or selected patients requiring neurological monitoring inside the ICU.
Can an EEG diagnose autism?
An EEG is not a routine diagnostic test for autism. However, a treating physician may request one when a patient with autism has suspected seizures, unusual staring episodes, abnormal movements, regression or changes in awareness.
What is the difference between routine and extended EEG?
A routine EEG records a shorter sample of brain activity. Extended recordings—such as 4, 8, 12 or 24 hours—provide a longer observation period and may improve the chance of recording intermittent events. The appropriate duration must be selected by the treating physician.
Is an EEG painful or dangerous?
A standard EEG is generally painless and non-invasive. The electrodes record electrical activity; they do not deliver electricity into the brain. Patients should follow any preparation instructions provided by their physician or EEG team.
How should a patient prepare for an EEG?
Hair should usually be clean, dry and free from oils, creams, sprays or styling products. Continue or stop medication only according to the treating physician’s instructions. Sleep-deprivation or other preparation should never be performed unless specifically requested.
Can an EEG be performed at home?
Yes. Modern Systems for Medical Services offers mobile EEG recording at home for suitable cases, subject to appointment availability, clinical requirements and the treating physician’s request.
Can you perform EEG recording inside the ICU?
Bedside and ICU EEG recording may be arranged for hospitalized patients, subject to clinical suitability and prior coordination with the treating physician and healthcare facility.
Where are your EEG services available?
Services can be arranged at the patient’s home, at the hospital bedside or ICU, or at our location in Banafseg 7, New Cairo, Cairo, Egypt. Contact our team to confirm availability.
How can I book an EEG appointment?
Call or WhatsApp Modern Systems for Medical Services on +20 121 281 8815. Please provide the requested recording duration, preferred location and the treating physician’s instructions when available.
